Our communities and environment

A key component to the Markel Style is “a commitment to our communities.”

The Markel Style instructs us to build the financial value of the company, and also reminds us to respect our relationships with suppliers, to look for a better way to do things and to honor our commitment to our communities, which includes our environment.

At Markel, we care about and are committed to the communities where our employees and customers live and work. Together with our employees, we have a strong tradition of supporting community-based, national, and international organizations whose missions align with the Markel Style. Below are examples in which we support local communities:

Matching gift program
  • In 2018, nearly 700 associates took advantage of our matching gift program, and Markel made matching gifts to over 500 different not-for-profit organizations in the US and Bermuda.
Corporate donations | Financial support
  • Markel regularly supports not-for-profit organizations with sponsorships, donations, and capital campaigns.
Corporate donations | In-kind giving
  • In addition to monetary support, Markel regularly provides in-kind giving in the form of donated IT equipment and office furniture.
Developing future leadership
  • Markel encourages the future development of our workforce by supporting organizations that help students navigate the challenges of higher education and pursue their desired careers.

At Markel, we have a long-term view. We care deeply about the future and how our actions today affect our world tomorrow, and we continue to take steps to reduce our own impact on the environment and implement more sustainable practices. Our core business resides in the insurance marketplace, and as such our primary opportunity for positive environmental impact is often in the office, including:

Efficient buildings

  • Markel offices in LEED certified buildings (two certified gold, eight certified silver)
  • Fifteen Markel offices are ENERGY STAR labeled
  • Touchless faucets and low-flow water restrictions throughout most of our buildings

Clean office environment

  • Smoke- and tobacco-free environments
  • Filtered water filing stations at our corporate headquarters and most of our other buildings
  • Zero VOC interior paints (UL Greenguard Gold certified) used at all our US locations

Waste reduction

  • Recycling and paper shredding program at our corporate headquarters (217,372 pounds recycled), and reduction of paper consumption through installation of global “follow-you” printing system in 2018
  • Participation in “Grounds to Grown On” K-Cup recycling program, styrofoam cups replaced with reusable cups at corporate headquarters, and single-use plastic banned in London offices
  • Surplus office equipment and furniture are recycled through donations to not-for-profit organizations
  • Flexible schedules, video conferencing, and working remotely to reduce unnecessary travel
