Base pay: We offer base pay that is externally competitive, internally equitable, and tied to performance.

Incentive compensation: The Annual Incentive Compensation program recognizes associates who perform above and beyond and achieve goals and objectives that contribute to the overall success of the company. Markel recognizes the initiative of associates as its most significant competitive advantage and is willing to reward efforts that contribute to the accomplishment of key business objectives.
Markel associates have access to exceptional medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug plans—with full coverage for spouses and dependents.

Medical and prescription coverage: Markel offers two traditional PPO plans and two Consumer Plans with Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

Reimbursement accounts: These accounts provide tax savings on eligible healthcare, dependent care, and commuting expenses.

Vision coverage: Vision coverage assists in funding eye exams, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and frames.

Dental coverage: Dental coverage offers basic and major restorative services, such as orthodontia.

401(k) plan: We make it easy to begin investing in your future, and we do our part by matching your contributions. The 401(k) plan provides you with an avenue to save for retirement through payroll deduction with multiple investment options and matching contributions.

Roth 401(k) plan: The Roth 401(k) allows you to contribute after-tax dollars and then withdraw tax-free dollars from your account when you retire.

Stock purchase plans: The Markel ESPP enables you to contribute money each pay period to buy Markel Corporation shares. You will benefit from a 15% discount on the shares you purchase using payroll contributions, up to the IRS limit of 25k worth of stock per year. It's a simple way to share in any future success of our company — success that you help to create.


  • Affordable – contribute from $50 - $25,000 of your eligible compensation each pay period.
  • Low price look-back – the purchase price for payroll contributions will be determined based on the less of two market values; the closing price on the first day of the offering period or closing price on the purchase date.
  • Purchase share at a discount – for payroll contribution, receive a 15% discount off the fair market value of Markel Corporation shares you purchase for the first $25,000 worth of stock purchased per year. After your reach this limit, we will roll over your contributions and purchase stock for you monthly at a 10% discount. For contribution of personal funds (lump-sum purchase) receive a 10% discount off the fair market value.
  • Convenient –payroll contribution are taken directly from your pay, on an after-tax basis.
  • Flexible – start, stop or change your contribution amount during an enrollment period or a change period.

 

You decide the best use for the stock you acquire through the ESPP. You can sell your shares for any  future need or hold on the shares as  a long-term investment — subject to the Plan's share holding restrictions

Matching gift program: Markel matches associate contributions to all eligible not-for-profit organizations up to the annual maximum of $1,500 per associate with six months of full-time employment.
