US Total Rewards program
The Markel team is rewarded and generously supported with a full array of benefits.
Markel’s Total Rewards program offers competitive compensation, retirement, and benefits, as well as career advancement opportunities. We focus on the total value of our employment offer, and we continuously seek to improve our offerings by tailoring our programs to serve the needs of our associates and their families.
Our total rewards strategy is simple: to provide competitive compensation opportunities, solid benefit choices, and professional development opportunities.
At Markel, we believe that investing for your future is very important and we offer options to help you meet your unique investment needs.
401(k) plan: We make it easy to begin investing in your future, and we do our part by matching your contributions. The 401(k) plan provides you with an avenue to save for retirement through payroll deduction with multiple investment options and matching contributions.
Roth 401(k) plan: The Roth 401(k) allows you to contribute after-tax dollars and then withdraw tax-free dollars from your account when you retire.
Stock purchase plans: The Markel ESPP enables you to contribute money each pay period to buy Markel Corporation shares. You will benefit from a 15% discount on the shares you purchase using payroll contributions, up to the IRS limit of 25k worth of stock per year. It's a simple way to share in any future success of our company — success that you help to create.
You decide the best use for the stock you acquire through the ESPP. You can sell your shares for any future need or hold on the shares as a long-term investment — subject to the Plan's share holding restrictions
Paid time off and paid holidays: Markel provides associates paid time off for vacation, family illness, and absences. In addition, associates receive company-designated holidays. Markel provides associate paid leaves of absence for bereavement leave and jury duty.
Discount programs: Enjoy discounted tickets for admission to theme parks, popular attractions, as well as computer and phone discounts. Markel offices have location-specific discounts.
Dress for your day: The Dress for your Day guidelines allows employees discretion to select appropriate dress (i.e., jeans, dress pants, etc.) for each workday (Monday through Friday). Dress for your Day is intended to be relaxed when employees have a workday that does not involve meetings with clients, vendors, or customers, and dress more formally when it does.
Flexible work arrangements: Markel is committed to helping employees face the demands of juggling work, family and life-related issues by offering possible flexible work arrangements with manager approval.
Matching gift program: Markel matches associate contributions to all eligible not-for-profit organizations up to the annual maximum of $1,500 per associate with six months of full-time employment.
Paid parental leave: Markel provides 100% fully-paid parental leave to all mothers and fathers with the birth or adoption of a child.
