To enhance safety in gymnastics, historical insights have led to the development of key safety tips based on loss control surveys.
Studying history often provides valuable insights for future improvements. The following list of essential safety tips were developed from 2024 gymnastics program loss control surveys completed by Markel.
Safety tips:
- Ensure exit doors are unobstructed and passages are clear.
- Place trophies in a case to prevent injuries from falling trophies.
- Trim overhanging tree limbs and maintain clear spacing between trees and your building to avoid structural damage.
- Keep an equipment maintenance log with purchase dates, inspection frequency and any repairs or upgrades.
- For bleachers with four rows or less, take one of the following actions:
- Install rear guard and side railings.
- Replace existing bleachers with ones equipped with rear guard and side railings.
- Position bleachers so the top row is backed flush with a wall serving as a rear guard.
- Stencil "Please do not sit on the top row of bleachers" on the top row.
- Provide proper anchoring of bleachers as per manufacturer recommendations.
- For bleachers with five rows or more, install side railings starting at the fifth row.
- Place equipment at least six feet away from walls or install padding to reduce injury exposure.
- Have fire extinguishers inspected annually by a maintenance company with current inspection tags.
- Regularly fluff and clean your foam pit to maintain maximum softness for landings, as outlined in the USA Gymnastics Safety/Risk Management Handbook.
By following these tips, you can ensure a safer environment for everyone involved.
