Markel International, London

As part of our commitment to claims excellence, Markel International has invested in its wholesale claims leadership team with seven senior promotions. This latest management decision plays an important role in Markel’s strategy, as the business looks to accelerate further growth across its Wholesale division in 2023 and beyond.

Under the new leadership team, Jonathan Pestell has been named head of claims performance for specialty, where he will focus on driving broker engagement, while identifying areas to strengthen Markel’s claims service, across its professional and financial risk, cyber, equine, trade credit, political risk and surety (TCPRS) classes of business.

Before his appointment, Pestell was claims manager of professional indemnity, which he held for eight years at Markel International. Prior to this position, he was a senior adjuster at the organisation for four years.

Alongside Pestell, Thomas Upton has been promoted to head of claims performance for marine and energy. In his new role, Upton will concentrate on building and strengthening broker relationships, while ensuring that complex claims continue to be dealt with effectively for clients working within the marine and energy liability space.

Upton has been with Markel International for over seven years, starting as a senior claims adjuster before progressing to the role of claims manager of energy liability and terrorism.

Joining the duo is Dan Lofty, who has taken the role of head of claims operations and special projects team. Lofty will be responsible for managing vendor relationships, ensuring the business continues to deploy the correct systems and processes.

Lofty joined Markel International more than seven years ago; starting as a senior casualty claims adjuster in the reinsurance division, before his promotion to reinsurance and special projects claims manager.

The trio will report directly to Chris O’Shea, wholesale claims director at Markel International.

Meanwhile, Rachel Tighe and Natalie Myhill will assume the role of assistant claims manager for professional indemnity and financial institutions, respectively; reporting to Richard Chamberlain claims manager of financial institutions, fintech, and professional indemnity at Markel International.

Completing the line-up is Tristan Davies and Ian Holmes who have been promoted to claims manager for the energy, liability, terror, and special projects teams (SPT), respectively. Davies will report to Upton, while Holmes will work under Lofty.

All seven appointments will be based at Markel’s London office.

O’Shea commented: “Congratulations to Jon, Tom, Dan, Rachel, Natalie, Tristan, and Ian on their recent promotions. With their wealth of knowledge and experience in claims, I am confident that they will further enhance our award-winning claims service, by working closely with our brokers, clients, and underwriting teams to drive profitable growth in our wholesale business.”
