Markel International recently announced that the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) will join the organisation and DAC Beachcroft as a tripartite partner on its Mentoring the Market programme. Find out how this partnership will help to promote mentorship and career development throughout the market.

Markel’s Mentoring the Market (MTM) programme is a mentoring initiative that has been set up to help industry professionals acquire new skills, expand their networks, and excel in their insurance careers. To strengthen the MTM offering, Markel International recently announced that the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) will join the organisation, alongside law firm, DAC Beachcroft, as a tripartite partner.

As part of the partnership, the LMA will provide a valuable market perspective to grow the MTM offering, through events, training, and its network of members. In parallel with this, DAC Beachcroft will continue to provide a legal perspective and support, which will also play a crucial role in the MTM growth strategy.

Earlier this year, MTM was launched for the insurance industry, with a focus on creating a more inclusive culture in the claims sector. Since its inception the programme has been described by delegates as “pioneering” and “incredibly positive,” with many brokers, insurers, and loss adjustors signing up as mentors or mentees, to not only acquire new skills and contacts, but also promote inclusivity within claims. “Markel’s culture is all about supporting our employees with training and career development,” said Rachel Ansell, co-founder of MTM and senior claims adjuster for professional indemnity at Markel International. “At Markel, our culture is about growth and not feeling like a cog in a machine – being valued and assisting with the growth of our peers is an ethos we bring to MTM,” she added.

Natalie Myhill, co-founder of MTM and senior claims adjuster at Markel International, said: “The programme offers traditional and reverse mentoring, as well as a reciprocal option where, for example, we would pair up two senior level colleagues with similar levels of experience, so that they can learn and grow together.”

So far, more than 350 people have signed up to MTM, which marks a successful milestone for Markel, the LMA, and DAC Beachcroft. The members who have registered on the programme include graduates to directors and everything in between, bringing different skills and expertise from the insurance industry.

Ansell and Myhill are responsible for running the mentoring scheme for Markel and will continue pairing mentors and mentees together, while working with DAC Beachcroft and the LMA to organise events. The MTM programme will continue releasing seminars on real-life scenarios that focus on workplace issues in order to help others acquire valuable knowledge and excel in their place of work. “By creating seminars on subjects which are often seen as taboo in our industry, such as managing stress, anxiety, or building resilience, MTM is supporting claims professionals across the market,” said Myhill.

Adding to her sentiment, Ansell said: “Between now and the end of 2021, we are organising an in-person event, so mentors and mentees can meet face-to-face, if they haven’t already. We have big ambitions for this programme and we’re looking forward to growing it and seeing more people in-person at future events in 2022.”
