Andrew Umphress

Andrew Umphress joined Markel in August 2023 as Head of Terrorism, North America in our War and Terrorism Team. He began his career with Validus Reaseguros as a Facultative Property Underwriter in Latin America. In 2017, Andrew moved to New York, where he held several roles in E&S and Public Entity property as well as leading and growing several Terrorism lines of business for various carriers.

Andrew has over 14 years’ experience in the Lloyd’s market, including time spent with Validus Specialty, Brit Specialty, and Munich Re. He is responsible for growing and managing Markel’s Terrorism and Active Assailant portfolio within the region.

Andrew holds a dual Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Affairs with a Minor in Spanish from James Madison University.

Andrew lives in Scarsdale, NY with his wife and two children, and enjoys playing golf in his spare time. His favourite sport to watch and play, however, is baseball.
