Erik Johnson

Erik Johnson joined Markel in May 2024 as a Consultant in the International Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer, before moving to Head of Technical Underwriting and Oversight in 2025.

Erik is responsible for setting standards, managing oversight, and supporting underwriting teams to write profitable business safely. Erik started his career with Marsh Canada and moved to London in 2004. He has over 20 years of experience across strategy, portfolio underwriting, underwriting management and M&A, working for firms including Deloitte and Lloyd’s.

He is a founding Board member of Inclusion@Lloyd’s and sits on the Advisory Board of the Haskayne School of Business’s Risk Management & Insurance degree programme.

He holds a BComm in Insurance, Risk Management & Finance from the University of Calgary, an MSc in Risk Management & Insurance from Bayes Business School, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
