Chief Underwriting Officer, International
Tom Hillier joined Markel in December 2023 as Managing Director – Specialty and was promoted to Chief Underwriting Officer for Markel International in October 2025.
Tom moved to Brit in 2013 as Class Underwriter for International Casualty and by 2014 had been elevated to Divisional Director for Specialist Liability. In 2019 Tom was promoted to Managing Director for Specialty at Brit, with expansion of responsibility to include Marine, Energy, Renewables, Space, Nuclear & UK, International and US Casualty. Currently, Tom leads the Specialty division for Markel Wholesale, with oversight of Marine & Energy Liability, Transport & Logistics, International Casualty, Livestock & Bloodstock, Trade Credit, Political Risk and Surety.
Tom has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Nottingham in Environmental Engineering Technology. At the weekend if Tom is not at the football watching his team Tottenham Hotspur, he is either walking his dog on the beaches of southeast England or sporting lycra and cycling the Surrey hills.
