When Markel went public in the 1980s, it contained around 500 employees across its headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. Since then, the organisation has grown exponentially, employing more than 5,000 people across 16 countries. Despite this growth, Joanna Browning, Senior Managing Director – People Experience, Markel, explains that the latter’s cultural foundations have been protected, developed and maintained while remaining an employee-led business.
Speaking to the HR Grapevine, Browning discusses what being ‘truly people-first’ means in practice and why Markel’s culture has and will continue to play an integral part in the organisation’s success.
