Mary Phelps is uniquely qualified to help horse owners, trainers, competitors, farms and equestrian businesses navigate their insurance needs.
Since joining Markel in 2003, Mary has paired her insurance expertise with more than 35 years of hands-on experience in the equestrian industry as a horsewoman, farm owner, international competitor, journalist, and photographer.
Because she lives the equestrian lifestyle every day, Mary understands firsthand the financial and emotional investment involved in horses, farms and equestrian businesses. She brings that experience to her role as an advocate for her clients, helping them understand their risks and select appropriate coverage.
Mary works closely with Markel’s experienced equine, liability and farm property teams. Markel has served the horse industry for more than 50 years, providing the specialized knowledge and strength behind the coverage Mary offers. “My goal is to understand what you do, explain your options clearly, and work with the Markel team to find coverage that makes sense for you.”
A Lifetime in the Horse World
Mary founded HorsesDaily.com in 1997 and became a pioneer of online equestrian journalism and photography. For nearly three decades, she has covered major equestrian events and developed relationships throughout the international horse community.
She also competes internationally in Combined Driving with her pony team, The Flying Gangsters. In 2019, Mary represented the United States at the FEI World Driving Championships for Ponies in Kisbér, Hungary, winning the individual Gold Medal in the cones phase. Two members of her team, Bugsy Malony and Tony Da Pony, later became Breyer® model horses.
Her combination of insurance expertise, international competition experience, and farm ownership gives Mary a perspective few insurance specialists can offer.
