RICHMOND, Va., May 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Markel Corporation (NYSE: MKL) reported book value per common share outstanding of $493.96 at March 31, 2014, up 4% from $477.16 at December 31, 2013. Comprehensive income to shareholders was $230.3 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2014 compared to $257.7 million for the first quarter of 2013. The combined ratio was 95% for the first quarter of 2014 compared to 91% for the first quarter of 2013. Diluted net income per share was $6.25 for the quarter ended March 31, 2014 compared to $9.50 for the first quarter of 2013.
